Freshman Varsity Football and Academics at Orange Lutheran

Mario entered Orange Lutheran as a freshman in 2025 and earned an opportunity to start on the varsity offensive line.

That meant his introduction to high school also included varsity practices, film study, strength training, Friday night games and preparation for some of the strongest football programs on Orange Lutheran’s schedule.

At the same time, the responsibilities in the classroom did not change.

That balance is what makes the academic recognition from his freshman season especially meaningful to Mario and his family.

Mario Luna Earns Trinity League Scholar Athlete Recognition

During his freshman year, Mario received Trinity League Scholar Athlete recognition for his work as a student athlete while competing in varsity football.

For an offensive lineman, preparation does not end when practice is over. There is film to study, assignments to learn, defensive fronts to understand, strength and conditioning work, recovery and game preparation.

Mario had to learn how to manage those responsibilities while maintaining his academic work at Orange Lutheran.

The Scholar Athlete recognition became an important part of his freshman story because it represented both sides of being a student athlete.

Football mattered.

School mattered too.

Why the Scholar Athlete Award Matters to Mario

Mario’s freshman year was his first experience balancing high school academics with a varsity football schedule.

There were practices, games, travel, lifting, recovery and film, but there were also assignments, tests and expectations in the classroom.

The recognition reinforced something Mario wants to carry throughout his high school career: development as a football player should not come at the expense of development as a student.

For college coaches evaluating a student athlete, the football film tells one part of the story. Academic consistency, accountability and the ability to manage responsibilities provide another part.

Orange Lutheran Core Value Award for LOVE

Mario was also selected to receive Orange Lutheran’s Core Value Award for LOVE.

This recognition was especially meaningful because it focused on character rather than statistics, recruiting rankings or what happened during a football game.

At Orange Lutheran, LOVE represents how a student treats other people and contributes to the community around him.

For Mario, that meant trying to be the same person away from football that he wanted his teammates to see on the field: dependable, respectful and willing to put the team ahead of himself.

More Than an Offensive Lineman

Football recruiting naturally focuses on measurements, film, strength, technique, competition and projection.

Those things are important to Mario too.

But the LOVE Award represents something that cannot be measured with a forty time, bench press or recruiting ranking.

It represents character.

Offensive line is also one of the most team dependent positions in football. Five players have to communicate and trust each other. A lineman may execute a great block without his name ever appearing in the statistics.

Learning to put the group before individual attention is something Mario has experienced through playing offensive line, and it connects naturally with what the LOVE recognition represents.

2025 Orange Lutheran Varsity Football Recognition

Mario was also recognized for his freshman season as a member of the 2025 Orange Lutheran varsity football team.

That recognition marked the completion of his first high school football season and his first year competing at the varsity level.

Mario did not spend the season only watching varsity football from the sideline. He earned a starting opportunity on the offensive line as a freshman.

That required him to learn how to prepare for older varsity defenders and handle the responsibilities of an offensive lineman while he was still adjusting to his first year of high school.

Starting Varsity Offensive Line as a Freshman

Earning a starting varsity role became another major part of Mario’s freshman year.

Wearing #78 for Orange Lutheran, Mario gained varsity experience on the offensive line while competing against defenders from programs including Basha, Sierra Canyon, Junipero Serra, Mater Dei, Servite and Santa Margarita.

Film from those games includes direct blocking reps against defenders who later developed into nationally recruited prospects and college commits.

Among the defenders identified from Mario’s 2025 freshman film are future Ohio State signee Khary Wilder, Kansas State commit Anitoni Tahi, UCLA commit Montana Toilolo and Nevada commit Caleb Jordan.

What Torta Power Represents Off the Field

Torta Power started as a football identity connected to Mario’s Mexican roots and his life as an offensive lineman.

Offensive linemen call it a pancake when they put a defender on the ground.

For Mario, it is a torta.

But the freshman awards helped give the name another meaning.

Torta Power is not supposed to represent only what happens between the whistles. Mario wants it connected to how he works, how he represents his family, how he handles school and how he treats the people around him.

What Mario Learned From His Freshman Year

Mario’s freshman season was a beginning, not a finish line.

He entered high school learning how to compete at the varsity level while also learning how to manage the responsibilities that came with Orange Lutheran academics and football.

The awards became reminders of three areas he wants to continue developing throughout high school: football, academics and character.

There will always be another game, another assignment, another workout and another opportunity to improve.

The goal is to keep doing the work when nobody is handing out an award.
