At just 14 years old, Mario Luna, affectionately known as Torta Power, has once again proven that age is just a number when it comes to determination and heart. From Ensenada, Mexico, Mario was selected as a starting lineman for the prestigious Baja California Selección U17 Mexico Team, making him the youngest athlete to participate in the tournament. This remarkable milestone took place at the 7th National Under-17 Championship in Quintana Roo, organized by the FMFA (Federación Mexicana de Fútbol Americano), which brought together the most talented young players from all over the country.
For Mario, being chosen to represent Baja California at just 14 was a huge honor. It was the result of years of relentless effort, countless hours of practice, and an unwavering passion for the game. His journey to this national stage began with standout performances while playing for the COBACH Tigres de Tijuana, where his strength, skill, and intelligence on the field caught the attention of coaches and scouts from the LIFA BC League in Tijuana.
During the selection process, Mario stood out not just because of his size and athletic ability, but because of his mental toughness and willingness to play anywhere his team needed him. Competing against players as much as three years older than him, he earned a starting spot on both sides of the ball, playing as a defensive tackle, offensive tackle, and offensive guard. His versatility made him an invaluable asset for the team.
As a lineman, Mario knows what it means to fight in the trenches, to take on challenges that often go unnoticed by casual fans, and to be the foundation of both the offense and the defense. But this tournament in Cancún was about more than just football. It was a dream come true.
“Playing at the U17 national championship in Cancún was one of the best experiences of my life,” Mario said. “I got to meet so many members of my Torta Power family, take pictures, sign autographs, and feel all their support. It was really emotional and motivating. I’m so thankful to everyone who believed in me and gave me this chance.”
The championship in Cancún gave Mario the chance to connect not only with other talented players from around Mexico but also with the growing community of fans who have been following his journey. Known for his approachable and humble attitude, Mario made time for everyone, posing for countless photos, signing autographs, and thanking the many kids and families who came up to him with words of encouragement.
For Mario, the Torta Power family is more than just fans. It’s a community of people who believe in what he represents: hard work, humility, and the belief that dreams are possible if you’re willing to put in the effort.
The experience in Cancún also allowed him to enjoy the beauty of the Mexican Caribbean. Playing on such a big stage, with the ocean breeze and national pride in the air, inspired him even more to keep striving for greatness. He expressed his deep gratitude to Steven Moreno and Salvador Moreno, the league leaders who believed in him and made it possible for him to showcase his talent on a national platform.
“I’ll never forget this experience,” Mario added. “Playing at this level, meeting so many amazing people, and feeling the support of my family and fans was unforgettable. I want to keep making everyone proud.”
For many young players, competing in the U17 National Championship is the pinnacle of their youth football careers. For Mario, it’s just another chapter in his journey. At such a young age, he has already set an example for others by showing that you can stand out even when you’re the youngest player on the field, as long as you’re prepared to put in the work and play with heart.
His performance in this championship is inspiring a new generation of youth football players across Mexico, showing them that anything is possible when you combine talent with dedication.
Mario Luna’s story is a reminder that football is about more than just winning games. It’s about personal growth, representing your community, and building bonds with teammates and supporters who become like family. As he continues to develop his skills as both an offensive lineman and defensive lineman, his story is far from over.
The Torta Power movement is growing stronger with every step he takes on the field. And if his experience at the U17 National Championship is any indication, the best is yet to come.
Congratulations to Mario Luna for making history as the youngest starter on the Baja California U17 team. We are excited to see how far he will go and proud to have him represent Ensenada, Baja California, and youth football players everywhere.
